How is health and sanitation handled in the learning environment?
'Think about this...'
Does the facility choose to have a professional cleaning crew that cleans, sanitizes, and disinfects the facility each day? Are soft toys and linens washed on a consistent basis? Are mouthed toys removed from the play area when a child is done playing with mouthed toys? Are toys washed and thoroughly sanitized each day?

Child Care Costs Escalated Once More
Families have the huge responsibility to ensure their children's safety both when they are in their presence and when others provide care for them. The rising costs of child care soared in the US approximately 15 years ago. To date, little has forced the cost down. Families must be constructive in choosing high-quality care, at a cost that is conducive to their household budgets. Take a peek!

The Secret to Praising your Children Properly
Praise is a tightrope. Reward and encourage your children, but not to the point that they enter the world convinced they’re flawless geniuses. Failures and knockbacks are inevitable, yet will be extra-difficult if greatness is key to your child’s sense of identity.

Head Start students scored better than a control group for cognitive and social-emotional development, had higher rates of immunizations, healthier weights and less problematic behaviors. Studies also show that children attending a quality early learning program such as Head Start are more likely to be proficient readers in third grade, more likely to graduate from high school, and go on to attain college degrees.

Nearly One in Five Infants Diets Fall Short on Iron
More than one quarter of toddlers and preschoolers do not eat a single serving of vegetables on a given day After their first birthday, the nutrition of young children tends to decline as they transition away from baby food. Study findings show that about 27 percent of children between 1 and 3 years of age do not eat a single discrete serving of vegetables on a given day. Of those who do, french fries are the most common vegetable consumed. Mixed dishes (like pasta dishes containing vegetables) become more common as children get older and can be good sources of vegetables and other nutritious foods such as whole grains, lean meats and other protein foods, low-fat dairy, and healthy fats.

Choosing a Nursery can be a Minefield of Decisions
Local nurseries offer a range of approaches. Alongside mainstream nurseries (offering the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, set by the Government to ensure all children have reached a similar level of education by the time they begin the National Curriculum) others offer approaches influenced by Steiner, Reggio Emilia, Montessori and HighScope to name a few. Most will work towards the Governments Early Learning Goals, but do so using different teaching practices. Parents can't be expected to know every approach, however they do know their children best and a little research can go a long way in aiding the right decision for your family.

While education experts say the need of the hour is a complete overhaul of the system, one of the more immediate solutions is building a certain amount of agility into physical spaces, keeping in mind the school’s principles and goals, projects the teachers want to do, and the mindset they want to instil in students.

Reggio On the Map: Students Get a Boost
Research has long suggested that children learn best when teaching is aligned with their natural exuberance, energy, and curiosity. Increased student involvement is fast becoming a highly effectual model for a more cooperative learning environment, which educators believe strengthens students’ commitment to community and democracy. They also have noted that in order to better equip children for the changing demands of the 21st century, old-school, and 19th-century, teaching techniques must be rethought.
Student-centered pedagogy draws from the basic principles of the Reggio Emilia approach, a progressive childhood education movement formed at the end of World War II in Italy that celebrates the child as possessing strong potential for development and who learns and grows into that potential through relationships with others.

Do Children Cause Global Warming? Project Syndicate
We have been here before. In the 1970s, fear of environmental degradation and societal collapse drove some well-intentioned people to remain childless. The scientists and opinion leaders comprising the Club of Rome famously (and erroneously) predicted humanity’s end, forecasting that the world would run out of aluminium, copper, gold, lead, mercury, molybdenum, natural gas, oil, silver, tin, tungsten, and zinc. They advocated stopping economic growth, cutting consumption, and making sure people had fewer children.

The benefits of getting the same teacher twice in a row were largest for minority students. And when a large share of classmates had the same teacher as before, even kids who were new to the class posted higher than expected test scores. That suggests when people know each other well, it’s a better classroom environment for learning."

Planting the Seeds for Early Childhood Learning
Early childhood education is a necessity when it comes to having a well-developed child. Education happens in many ways through a school system as well as the work that is done by parents at home. Developing a love for learning early is important so that the child looks forward to the learning process. Learning can take place in numerous ways and should be adapted when needed to a child’s learning speed and abilities.

Growing up in Poverty Affects the Structure of the Brain-even in Adult Life
"We’ve known for quite a while that lacking adequate education, nutrition and access to healthcare, adversely affects a child’s brain — it’s a matter which has been studied extensively in the past. Study: Minority Children Develop Implicit Racial Bias in Early Childhood
"It is important for children to be exposed to diversity in their lives and for them to learn to appreciate this diversity. That can include reading stories with main characters from different backgrounds when people live in more racially homogeneous environments, or through positive experiences in multicultural cities," says Steele. "In our educational system, it is important that our materials reflect our increasingly diverse communities, and that children have the opportunity to learn about successful, contributing members of society from all walks of life. This can help to challenge racial biases and can help to contribute to a more equitable society for everyone."

The Environment, Reggio
“We place enormous value on the role of the environment as a motivating and animating force in creating spaces for relations, options and emotional and cognitive situations that produce a sense of well-being and security”

Fat Shaming Children at School
This is precisely the wrong way to go about combating the country’s supposed weight problem. It is a terrible, ill-advised, short-sighted idea – and one that could be quite dangerous. One in five kids are obese by the end of primary school, which is alarming – but to shame them into weight loss simply teaches them to equate their worth with a number on a scale, and sets them up for a lifetime of thinking their size is some sort of indication of who they are.

The study, published by the Education Endowment Foundation today, found that four- and five-year-olds made around a month’s additional progress in literacy by the end of the year, after their parents attended at least one Family Skills session on how to support their children’s learning.

The Push for Outdoor and Nature Based Preschools
"Most American kids don’t spend large chunks of their day catching salamanders and poking sticks into piles of fox poop. In a nation moving toward greater standardization of its public-education system, programs centered around getting kids outside to explore aren’t normal."

Taking inspiration from the Reggio Emilia and Montessori philosophies, Giggles has developed a glass room.
“I have always wanted, always envisaged, a creative space at Giggles,” she says.
The Reggio Emilia philosophy emphasises communication through creativity and embracing the child as a valued citizen in the present, not just the future. The Montessori approach allows children to become independent learners and trust in their own abilities by engaging in spontaneous, purposeful activities with the guidance of a trained adult.http://www.chchronicle.com.au/embracing-creativity-27083/

Autistic Children May Inherit DNA Mutations from Their Fathers
“This is a really good article—it’s somewhat provocative and it makes us think about [autism genetics in a] different way,” says Lucia Peixoto, a neuroscientist and computational biologist at Washington State University in Spokane, who was not involved in the research. “I think it’s a great contribution to the field.”
