I don’t necessarily wonder what they are going to be when they grow up; instead, I wonder why they are going to be when they grow up. After all, there could be a number of ways to pursue achieving your purpose (that is, how you will achieve your why), which will ultimately lead to whatyou do professionally.

Several cities and rural areas are becoming "hotspots" of unvaccinated children, according to a June 12 study published in the journal PLOS Medicine. And, say experts, this increase in unvaccinated children may be putting others in those areas at increased risk of getting sick.

NYT: Keeping Children Safe at the Beach or Pool

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 10 people die by accidental drowning each day, two of them children under 14. And water safety experts, who mostly love the water, want to see children in the water, but they do worry. Dr. Taneja remembered the lead author, Dr. Brenner, who died last year, as passionate about the work. “She was a swimmer and she loved kids, and it was really important to her to be a part of the science and contribute to anything that could keep kids safer and having fun in the water.”

Nearly One in Five Infants Diets Fall Short on Iron

More than one quarter of toddlers and preschoolers do not eat a single serving of vegetables on a given day After their first birthday, the nutrition of young children tends to decline as they transition away from baby food. Study findings show that about 27 percent of children between 1 and 3 years of age do not eat a single discrete serving of vegetables on a given day. Of those who do, french fries are the most common vegetable consumed. Mixed dishes (like pasta dishes containing vegetables) become more common as children get older and can be good sources of vegetables and other nutritious foods such as whole grains, lean meats and other protein foods, low-fat dairy, and healthy fats.

Private Jet Children Programming

“We noticed an increase in requests for flying with children,” said Matteo Atti, Executive Vice President Marketing, and Innovation at VistaJet. “Given the inconvenience and hassle of commercial air travel, limited time and with residencies in multiple countries, many high-net-worth families have turned to private aviation for their personal travels. Moreover, family trips are more and more often planned alongside business flights, to maximize personal time.”

“So many of our black stories that I have seen in the market feature our boys as sports, thugs, or entertainers or black history, but not the every day story of a mother’s love,” Hatch said.

The Secret to Raising Unentitled Children

"Beware prioritising material possessions over time spent with your child.Children are like sponges and will soak up what’s around them, so your actions are important. If you want – and get – stuff all the time, they will expect that, too. Spend time with them, listen to them, talk to them. Help your child feel secure."

Choosing a Nursery can be a Minefield of Decisions

Local nurseries offer a range of approaches. Alongside mainstream nurseries (offering the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, set by the Government to ensure all children have reached a similar level of education by the time they begin the National Curriculum) others offer approaches influenced by Steiner, Reggio Emilia, Montessori and HighScope to name a few. Most will work towards the Governments Early Learning Goals, but do so using different teaching practices. Parents can't be expected to know every approach, however they do know their children best and a little research can go a long way in aiding the right decision for your family.

Low Cognitive Ability Linked To Prejudice Against Same-Sex Couples, Australian Study Shows

“High cognitive ability leads to lower prejudice, net of a large set of confounds. Results hold across different ability measures and are strongest for verbal ability. Education partially mediates, but does not moderate, the effect of ability,” study author Francisco Perales of the University of Queensland wrote.

Finnish Couple Builds Giant Table to Teach Their Autistic Children to Communicate

“The first time I had the pictures on the Yetitablet for him that explained he needed to ‘put sock on, put next sock on, put trousers on etc’, his eyes widened, like he had just woken up. He looked at me, surprised, as if to say ‘mum, you finally get me!’. I will never forget that expression. My son got so excited that he even started creating these kinds of pictures himself for different tasks like brushing his teeth,” Maria says.

Classrooms of Tomorrow

While education experts say the need of the hour is a complete overhaul of the system, one of the more immediate solutions is building a certain amount of agility into physical spaces, keeping in mind the school’s principles and goals, projects the teachers want to do, and the mindset they want to instil in students.

Reggio On the Map: Students Get a Boost

Research has long suggested that children learn best when teaching is aligned with their natural exuberance, energy, and curiosity. Increased student involvement is fast becoming a highly effectual model for a more cooperative learning environment, which educators believe strengthens students’ commitment to community and democracy. They also have noted that in order to better equip children for the changing demands of the 21st century, old-school, and 19th-century, teaching techniques must be rethought.
Student-centered pedagogy draws from the basic principles of the Reggio Emilia approach, a progressive childhood education movement formed at the end of World War II in Italy that celebrates the child as possessing strong potential for development and who learns and grows into that potential through relationships with others.

What's Behind the Higher Suicide Rate Among Black Children

"Suicide rates in the United States have traditionally been higher among white than black individuals across all age groups," a study published this month in the journal JAMA Pediatrics states. However, "analyses revealed that the suicide rate among those younger than 13 years is approximately 2 times higher for black children compared with white children, a finding observed in boys and girls."

Early Obesity may lead to School-Age Cognitive Trouble

"Obesity, which can dysregulate hormones that act in multiple brain regions, is associated with lower cognition in adults, the researchers says. But until now, despite the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity, there has been scant research on whether weight status impacts how children learn, remember information, and manage attention and impulses."

Tiny Tots Get Schooled in STEM

"The school uses the Reggio-Emilia approach, an educational philosophy named after the city in Italy which has inspired schools around the world to consider children as competent, capable, and naturally curious. It frames the school's approach to children learning by placing adults alongside children as facilitators to their learning process. The teachers observe and document children's thoughts and explorations, and then they layer on learning by helping them to delve deeper into the things in which they are interested."

How You Can Help Children of Divorce

"When parents divorce, it’s vital that they commit to an amicable relationship for the sake of their children. This kind of relationship is, typically, even more important for the relationship between dad and his children. That’s because dad is, of course, the parent most likely to leave the home."

"The project’s mission was to increase the quality of early childhood education in West Bank through exchange experiences with preschool institutions of Reggio Emilia. The Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood education is an educational philosophy, based on “the image of the child as an active human being, as possessing strong potentials for development and as a subject of rights who learns and grows in the relationships with others.”

Make Junk Food Expensive and Children will go Hungry/The Guardian

"Since the proposals hit the news, the pushback has been fierce, with many people making a simple point: if you want to get people to eat better, don’t make bad food more expensive – make good food cheaper. But that seems so obvious a solution it’s worth asking why so many people would need to point it out. Why do we, as a society, approach public health from a punishment point of view rather than trying to increase accessibility?"

Do Children Cause Global Warming? Project Syndicate

We have been here before. In the 1970s, fear of environmental degradation and societal collapse drove some well-intentioned people to remain childless. The scientists and opinion leaders comprising the Club of Rome famously (and erroneously) predicted humanity’s end, forecasting that the world would run out of aluminium, copper, gold, lead, mercury, molybdenum, natural gas, oil, silver, tin, tungsten, and zinc. They advocated stopping economic growth, cutting consumption, and making sure people had fewer children.
