Don't Spoil Their Childhood, Let Them Have What They Want
As a child, I remember adults around me telling me not to 'hold the baby too much, stop sitting in front of the baby (so the baby could learn how to self-soothe).' It wasn't until I actually birthed my own children that I learned that I could hold them, love on them, and 'give them what they want.' I was so determined to do that, I changed my college major in order to learn as much as I could about young children. My decision 'chose' the industry that I practiced later. Take a moment to look at the suggested parenting tips. These are cute!

Are Children's Books Failing to Show Gender Equality?
Ever wonder how children perceive the books that we read to them? Trying to understand what a child thinks about 'gender' can be quite difficult. In our society today, it is critical that children have strong reading and language skills. It is most advisable to promote books that promote both self-awareness and gender equality. Take a moment and view the attached article, which provides some criteria to look for when choosing books.

The World Could Use a Little Kindness
Children in our world are subject to becoming 'lost and uncaring souls.' In order for the cycle to be broken, schools serving children of all ages are needed to join the crusade: to teach children to be kind to each other. And, of course, families must practice the same kindness at home as well in order for the children to practice such skills publicly, at school or the park, for example. Take a peek at the article below for additional tips.

Books to Help Children Cope with Anxiety
Here are several suggested books to help children understand disasters and cope with anxiety.
Talking to your Children After Hurricanes and Disasters
Having a discussion with your children about natural disasters or terrorism is difficult. Many families wonder exactly what should be said, how it should be said, and what is done to help the young minds heal from the experiences.
Here are some tips on how to help your children deal with their experience and your family’s current circumstances:
- Reassure your children that you love them, that all of you will be okay and that they can talk to you about anything worrying or upsetting them. Open communication is crucial. If children suspect their questions or comments upset you, they may shut down, making recovery more difficult later on.
- Watch for (or even expect) common symptoms of severe stress in your children, including difficulty sleeping, sleeping more than usual, nightmares, changes in appetite, irritability, acting out, withdrawing from others, obsessiveness, new hyperactivity and persistent crying. Recognize that your child cannot control those responses and monitor their symptoms so you can tell if they are worsening or improving.
- Talk to your child about what happened and/or what is happening. “Silence suggests that what has occurred is too horrible to even speak of,” the AAP notes. Children see and hear more than adults realize, so your child may understand more than you expect.
- Ask your child to describe what they have experienced or understand and correct any misinformation they have. Listen to them carefully, and address their fears directly and honestly. Let them know they can ask you any question, and keep communication going.
- Your child may need to ask the same question or tell you the same story over and over again — let them. When you answer their questions, adjust the amount of detail to what is age-appropriate and appropriate for your particular child.
- Using electronics such as tablets or smartphones is fine if they are available, but avoid television coverage of the disaster as much as possible, even for yourself. Plenty of research has shown that TV coverage of disasters can reinforce the trauma, especially for children but also for adults.
- Recognize that each person handles traumatic experiences differently. Your child may seem shellshocked, morbidly curious, or completely uninterested. All of these can be normal reactions. No feeling is “wrong,” and your children should know that too.
- Continually reassure your children that many people are working together to help your family, their friends’ families and others in the community and to keep everyone as safe as possible.
- Remember that your child is watching you to see how you react and respond to the situation. “This is an opportunity for you to role model how to cope and how to plan for the future,” the AAP notes.
The tips above are drawn largely from the AAP, which also provides thorough information on what to do before, during and after flooding. Here are additional resources:
- Talking to Children about Disasters from the AAP
- An in-depth guide on talking with youth and helping them cope after a disaster or traumatic event, from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
- Detailed, well-laid-out information on helping young children, school-age children, and teens after a disaster, and helping young children, school-age children, and teens with traumatic grief, from The National Child Traumatic Stress Network
- What parents should know about floods and hurricanes their impact on youth
- Understanding Child Traumatic Stress for parents
- Tips for Parents on Media Coverage (written originally for violent events at a school but applicable to other traumatic events)
- Tips to Help Children Cope With Disasters from the National Association for the Education of Young Children

Rating System in Iowa, Misunderstood?
In response to the call for higher quality care in ECE, many states have implemented quality rating systems. Only a few states have updated their state laws to reflect higher quality care. In most states that have a quality rating system, ECE environments have the option of either participating or not. In some states, not participation is a factor likely to jeopardize the financial success of the company. In others, if many programs are participating, companies must not only ensure the follow-thru on the rating system, but all of the other features that would allow for their company to stand out, helping them gain financially. Child care providers in Iowa choose not to participate in the rating system for many reasons but seem to stand unified in their non-participation. I have attached an article about the quality system in Iowa. Why Aren't Religious Organizations Required to Follow Basic Rules
Religious organizations in many states, are not required to uphold basic child care laws. Because of the lack of requirements, children attending those facilities could be in danger. State governments should not allow religious organizations to choose if they follow basic child care laws. For instance, the attached news opinion article discusses 'strippers, yes Strippers in the state of Alabama, are required to have background checks completed. Child care workers are not.
The average parent believes that just because a school is hidden behind the name of the 'church,' and the children are learning something about God, everything else is less important. Religious programs often have the ability to perform acts of corporal punishment, can 'legally' have an excessive amount of children, and less caregivers, and are able to legally supervise children poorly. And, what's more? They are legally performing those actions. While the negative examples may not be a part of every religious organization's child care programs, the fact remains that the law protects them, if they chose to. Years ago, I wrote an article entitled, 'Stop Using the name of Jesus to Hurt Children.' Choosing to follow Best Practices is advisable in all ECE communities, and should be the standards practiced in religious affiliations as well. Take a look at the attached article.

Scientists recently conducted a study of the development of 'the self.' I remember my mother telling me often through the years that adults must be careful of how they 'speak' to children because of an adult's ability to 'break' a child's spirit. Those words often helped me in my own parenting. The study conducted can be summarized as: "Young children's sense of self is similar to that of older kids and adults. The results show that our ability to reason about our self-worth as individuals develops early in life." Further, the results of the study show the following: " The results show, "that our ability to reason about our self-worth as individuals develops early in life, but also suggest that failure can instill discouragement sooner than previously thought."
Helping children develop a strong sense of self is important. Take a look at the link below:

Suicides by Young Children
You read the headline correctly! Suicides amongst young children have increased over the past 20 years. There are varied schools of thoughts regarding the reasons for the increases. Medications have been used to treat ADHD, anxiety, and other disorders. Some of the medications used to treat those disorders have side effects that could cause suicidal thoughts. When families make a decision to treat with medications, then the family must also deal with side effects of those medications. Unfortunately, there are some very negative implications. (Seattle)Children's Better Babysitters Program
Finding a babysitter is almost as challenging as finding an early childhood education program for some families (and they aren't the same). Very few cities offer babysitting education courses for their communities. Many families use the various nanny websites to find babysitters for their children for a variety of reasons: date night, occasional work days, or daily. I encourage all families to perform the appropriate background checks (local, state, and federal) before offering a babysitting job to anyone. It is important to have received and verified references as well. Be open and honest about surveillance as well. Below is an article about a babysitter education program offered in Seattle, WA. Financial Freedom: Pays Off
Is it a good idea to allow your children financial freedom so that they 'mess up' so that you may teach a lesson about finances? There are many viewpoints about the way that children receive and utilize their financial resources. While some parents feel offer payments to their children for services rendered (chores, special projects), some children may receive payments such as entitlements due to family wealth, and yet others never receive financial payments because parents can not afford to offer payments. Take a look at the article below for a further discussion about allowing children financial freedom. Happy Reading!

New Pediatric Hypertension Guidelines
When children become sick, it is often due to the common cold, ear infections, or even strep throat. Some children are at risk, however, of other illnesses that can have negative implications on their health. Hypertension is a condition that children should not have to experience. Here is a report that provides insightful information regarding hypertension and children.

Research: Baltimore Uses Trauma Research to Improve Life for Poor Parents and Their Children
Adverse Childhood Experiences are experiences that can lead a child into a life of turmoil, or could lead a child to a life of success if the child experiences an intervention. Take a look at the attached research article for examples of ACEs and ways that parents can make better decisions.

I am passionate about Early Childhood Education. Opportunities that are offered through ECE programs for families should exist in all programs. Unfortunately, those offerings are not a reality for most programs. Here is an example of a program that offered more than just 'care' for children. Take a look.

Handmade in Haiti Flag Medical Volunteers: Teaching Children New Skills
Helping children learn new skills that they wouldn't acquire at home nor school requires time, and a love of the skills being taught. As children grow and develop, their needs change. While their needs are changing, they may begin to express interest in activities that you were unaware of them having an interest in. One such activity could be sewing, music, and many other interests. The article below is an example of community service being offered to children through volunteering. Perhaps a program such as this is needed in your community? Leave an impression in your community.

As a young child, I remember traveling with my grandmother, when she served local families (members of our church most often). We would leave early every Saturday morning and return home late evening. We completed tasks that the elderly could not complete on their own: cooking, cleaning, being read or sung to, and any other tasks needed. People such as Chef Serato deserve a grand award for the services offered to families in need. The article attached is a beautiful account of community service and grace for children. Heartfelt.

When Charlottesville happened a few weeks ago, it was a shocking experience for most around the country. Certainly, millennials have a different take on history in today's time. Whereas history was considered more valuable in the past, some school programs have placed less emphasis on history, which should inspire families to share historical facts and even some opinions regarding the past. In fact, children know that if they are not in touch with their history, the future will wither. During the summer, my children were required to prepare history facts onto index cards and create booklets about certain aspects of history. They enjoyed the activity because it helped them understand better, where certain phrases originated, inventors that constructed things that we use today, and so forth. Take a peek at this article and gain another perspective.

Peanut Allergy Cured in Majority of Children in Immunotherapy-Trail
I shall never forget my office phone call, with an emergency about my daughter. She had eaten a new cereal that had peanuts inside. When I arrived, her face was swollen, and her eyes were nearly swollen closed. I was so afraid!!! When we arrived at the urgent care, she told me that she was having a reaction to the peanuts in the cereal. The next day, we were seeing our first allergist (after two other children born before).
Take a moment to review the new data about peanut allergies.
